What is a typical Norwegian thing to do? Dress forthe weather, making most of every sunlight, hiking, cabin trips, and tacos on Fridays. Here you will learn about the modern Norwegian society and the old Norwegian culture. Also you will learn about the culture here in North of Norway, where the people are open and we don't take ourselves too seriously.
You might know about Edvard Munch, Henrik Ibsen and A-ha, but you will also learn about contemporary artists and authors and we will specifically dig in to the Northern Norwegian ones. They are often inspired by the nature and culture where you are staying this year.
Raspeballe, fårikål and reindeer.. though most young Norwegians prefer pasta, pizza and the Asian cuisine, you will learn about traditional Norwegian courses, and of course taste a lot of different food. We are fond of sustainable cooking and will travel around in the area searching for the exclusive tastes of food from the surrounding areas.
Of course you will learn the language when you stay with us this year, but it's up to you how rapidly you pick up the skills. You will have classes, but the effort is all on you. We will teach you the basics. You will practice with your Norwegian friends.
Mosjøen is situated in the Southern Sami reindeer herding district. We will take you to Sijtijarnge, Sami language and culture center in Hattfjelldal (https://sijtijarnge.no/en/).Here you will learn about the arts and craft, the life of the Sami people.
Folkhighschools celebrate the diversity of rural cultures, including the Indigenous Sami culture. You’ll have a chance to learn about and appreciate these rich cultural traditions when you spend a school year in Mosjøen. Here you will meet reindeer, attend the the world's longest Christmas porridgetable, the longest sherpa stairs in the world and the tradition of taking a winter bath in the sea.
During winter, you will experience both dog sledding and snowmobile safari.
We can guarantee lots of aurora borealis experiences. Actually you don't have to go far, because the light pollution here at Toppen is low. But it is nice to go out camping, sleeping outside to get the full experience.
Helgeland is a hiker's and kayaker's paradise. You don't have to go far or climb high to get the most amazing view. You also don't have to travel a long way to find the white sandy beaches and the clear water. We are living in the middle of it all, and you will experience it all.
You can not come to Norway for a year without trying crosscountry skiing. You don't have to become brilliant, because most Norwegians are not, but you have to try. Most Norwegians go for shorter trips just to sitdown, enjoying an easy meal by the bonfire. It's also nice to sleep outside ina lavvo during winter time. That's for the bucket list.
In Northern Norway you can get close to nature and the wildlife. We will take you whale watching and we will give you the opportunity to get close to the sea eagle so that you can get some great photos of the majestic wildlife in the north.
You will go on a winter trip to one of Sweden's most beautiful alpine resorts with the active lines this year. You can choose to go cross country skiing or downhill. This is a social event and it's a good fun just hangig out together. Maybe you will notice the difference between the two Scandinavian languages as well? https://hemavan.nu/en/skiing-2/
You will join us on an exhilarating mountain adventure on the world’s northernmost via ferrata. Take the challenge and feel the satisfaction as you reach the summit!

With 4 175 steps, Helgelandstrappa is the world’s longest stone staircase. It stretches from the Vefsna River just outside the center of Mosjøen, all the way up to the summit of Øyfjellet, towering 818 meters above the fjord and the city below.

Helgeland has hundreds of beautiful islands along the coastal line. They are all different and can often be characterized by spectacular mountains. These mountains are so special that it has been written a fairytale about them so that the sailors could be able to navigate between them back in the day. We will expose the fairytale and take you there.
The whole school will go white - water rafting in the begnning of the school year. We go up to Trofors, hanging out with the brilliant guides of River North for a whole day. This will be great fun!
Every year we have international students attending different courses. Citizens of the Nordic countries do not need a residence permit. Citizens from EU countries don’t need to apply for a Norwegian residence permit in advance, but local police must be notified when a student takes up residence in the area.

If you drop out of school, Vefsn folkehøgskole will bill you for six weeks beyond the time you have been a student. This also applies if you were to be expelled for breaking the school's rules.
We do not have many criteria for who can apply as a student, but you must be 18 years old or become so during the first semester. You can apply from 1th of October for the next year's course, and we start to accept students from 15th of November. You will then receive an email from us with a response to the application. Furthermore, we accept students until the places are filled. In some cases, the composition of the line will determine whether you get a place or have to be on a waiting list. For example, the compositionof instruments may have an impact. If there are too many applicants for a line , your applicant number will be able to determine whether you get a place or not. In some cases, gender balance will have an impact.
Line teachers usually contact those who apply. Then you can get to know each other a little better and find out if this is the folk high school that suits you best. Maybe you have some questions, are unsure or have something you want to tell us about yourself.

EXPERIENCE LOFOTEN
The line trip goes to Lofoten, one of the world's most beautiful archipelagos. The combination of sea, pointed alpine mountains, small cozy fishing villages and white beaches with crystal clear water must be experienced. Here you get to cross out a lot of things on your bucket list.
Cold-water surfing in Lofoten is a special nature experience. If there is no storm, we may be able to take beginner's courses surfing at Unstad or Flakstad, which are two well-known surfing beaches. In Lofoten you will find some of Norway's most beautiful mountain hikes. Reinebringen is on our list if the weather allows it. We will go on an Arctic Whale Watching Safari and watch the majestic orcas and sperm whales, above the Arctic Circle. We also experience Lofoten from horseback, through the court of the gods from the Viking Age to sandy beaches and cliffs. The artistic life in Lofoten is also worth experiencing. We visit art galleries and museums and get food experiences of the rare with pure ingredients straight from nature.
